Transfers

Moving schools,
state by state.

How permanent teachers move between schools — the transfer systems, eligibility windows, priority categories and rural-return entitlements that shape a teaching career in each Australian jurisdiction.

NSW Department of Education

New South Wales

The system

Centralised transfer system administered by the Department. Permanent teachers nominate up to 20 preferred schools; matches occur when suitable vacancies arise.

Eligibility

Permanent full-time and part-time teachers. Must have completed any required service in a designated transfer school before requesting a move.

Priority categories
  • Compassionate transfers — documented medical or family grounds
  • Incentive-transfer entitlement earned from service in rural/remote 'transfer' schools (typically 3–8 years depending on classification)
  • Service transfers, then merit-based nominated transfers
Rural & remote return

Teachers at 4-, 6- and 8-point Rural & Remote Incentive Scheme schools accrue guaranteed transfer entitlements that let them nominate a metro or preferred location after their tenure.

Timing

Nominated transfer round opens annually (usually Term 3). Compassionate and priority transfers can be lodged at any time.

Department of Education (VIC)

Victoria

The system

No centralised transfer system — Victorian government schools recruit locally. Teachers apply directly to advertised vacancies through Recruitment Online.

Eligibility

Any ongoing teacher may apply for advertised positions in other schools.

Priority categories
  • Priority placement for teachers in excess (staff whose role is no longer required at their current school)
  • Reasonable-adjustment / medical redeployment via the DET Employee Health & Wellbeing team
Rural & remote return

Rural incentives are paid as cash + relocation support rather than transfer entitlements. Targeted Financial Incentives of up to $50,000 for hard-to-staff rural roles.

Timing

Vacancies advertised year-round through Recruitment Online; peak recruitment Term 3–4 for the following year.

Department of Education (QLD)

Queensland

The system

Statewide Transfer System. Teachers are appointed to a school and may request transfer after minimum service. Schools are grouped by 'zones' (1 metro through to 7 very remote).

Eligibility

Permanent teachers who have completed minimum required service at their current location — from 2 years in Zone 1 metro up to as little as 1–2 years in Zones 5–7.

Priority categories
  • Compassionate transfers on medical, family or safety grounds
  • Beneficial transfers — service in higher-zone (rural/remote) schools accrues points that give priority for a return-to-preferred-location transfer
  • General transfers by seniority + preference matching
Rural & remote return

Remote Area Incentive Scheme (RAIS) — service in Zone 4–7 schools accrues rental subsidy, retention bonuses AND transfer points. Guaranteed return to a preferred location after tenure.

Timing

Transfer nominations open once per year (usually mid-year), with placements taking effect at the start of the following school year.

Department of Education (WA)

Western Australia

The system

Statewide staffing system with a formal transfer mechanism. Teachers are appointed and may transfer once eligibility criteria are met.

Eligibility

Permanent teachers who have satisfied their minimum period of service at the current location. Rural service typically 2–3 years; metro 3–5 years.

Priority categories
  • Compassionate transfers assessed by the Staffing Directorate
  • Country service transfers — teachers who have served in country locations receive priority when returning to Perth or preferred locations
  • General transfers via merit selection or matching
Rural & remote return

Country Teaching Program — attraction & retention benefits plus locality allowance and a return-transfer entitlement after the agreed tenure (usually 3 years).

Timing

Transfer applications typically lodged in Term 3 for a Term 1 start the following year.

Department for Education (SA)

South Australia

The system

Placement and transfer system managed centrally for permanent teachers. Country incentive zones drive priority.

Eligibility

Permanent teachers who have completed their required tenure — commonly 3 years in a country location before priority transfer.

Priority categories
  • Compassionate / medical transfers
  • Country Incentive Zone tenure — points accrue for service in categorised country schools and unlock guaranteed placement back to a preferred zone
  • Merit-based transfers into advertised vacancies
Rural & remote return

Country Incentive Zones 1–8 attract a mix of location allowance, additional leave and — critically — an entitlement to be placed in a preferred school after completing the required tenure.

Timing

Transfer round runs annually; placements from the start of the school year.

Department for Education, Children and Young People (TAS)

Tasmania

The system

Small-jurisdiction system — most transfers occur through advertised vacancies rather than a centralised match. Priority placement is available in specific circumstances.

Eligibility

Permanent teachers may apply for any advertised position; priority placement is negotiated with the Department.

Priority categories
  • Priority employment for teachers in excess or on medical redeployment
  • Return-to-region entitlements after tenure in isolated schools
Rural & remote return

Isolation allowance and relocation assistance for teachers in remote schools; smaller and less formal than mainland transfer schemes.

Timing

Vacancies advertised on the Tasmanian Government jobs site as they arise, with a large recruitment push in Term 3–4.

ACT Education Directorate

Australian Capital Territory

The system

No formal statewide transfer system — the ACT is a single directorate. Teachers move between schools via merit-based expressions of interest and advertised vacancies.

Eligibility

Any permanent teacher can apply for advertised positions. Executive teachers rotate through positions on fixed terms.

Priority categories
  • Reasonable-adjustment / medical redeployment
  • Excess-teacher placement — priority into suitable vacancies
Rural & remote return

N/A — the ACT has no rural or remote schools.

Timing

Rolling recruitment through the ACT Education Directorate jobs portal.

NT Department of Education and Training

Northern Territory

The system

Transfers managed centrally, with strong incentives to serve in remote community schools. Teachers commonly commit to a 2–3 year remote tenure with a guaranteed return.

Eligibility

Permanent teachers who have completed their agreed remote tenure — usually 2 years — become eligible for a priority transfer.

Priority categories
  • Compassionate transfers on medical / family / safety grounds
  • Return-to-region transfers after remote service — a core part of the NT recruitment offer
  • General expressions of interest to advertised vacancies
Rural & remote return

Very remote teachers receive housing, locality allowance, retention bonuses AND a guaranteed transfer at the end of tenure — often into Darwin or an urban preference.

Timing

Recruitment year-round due to high turnover; annual transfer round confirms placements for the following school year.

Heads up: transfer policies change frequently and are governed by each state's EA and departmental procedure. Always confirm current rules with your HR business partner before resigning from a position or turning down a rural offer that carries a return entitlement.
