Before your first booking

Get on the books.

Five things every relief teacher needs squared away before a school can put you in front of a class.

    Confirm your registration status

    Provisional/Conditional registration is enough in every state — you don't need to be Fully registered before starting relief work.

  2. 2

    Get the right background check

    WWCC (NSW/WA/SA), Blue Card (bundled with QCT), WWVP/RWVP (ACT/TAS), Ochre Card (NT). VIT includes a police check.

  3. 3

    Complete mandatory training

    Anaphylaxis e-training (NSW), RRHAN-EC (SA), child-safe modules and CPR/first aid depending on the school system.

  4. 4

    Register with booking systems

    Public pool (TRACER, TRMS, Recruitment Online, ClassCover) + agency (anzuk, ClassCover, Tradewind) + direct-to-school lists.

  5. 5

    Set up payroll before your first day

    TFN, super fund, bank details, emergency contact and a copy of your registration certificate — some pools won't book you without them.

NSW

NESA
Registration needed
Provisional or Conditional NESA accreditation. Anaphylaxis e-training must be uploaded before your first day.
Background check
Working With Children Check (WWCC) — free for paid teachers via Service NSW.
How to get bookings
Department of Education ClassCover/Casual Pool + private ClassCover bookings. Catholic and Independent schools maintain their own lists.
Indicative day rate
Approx. $445–$555/day (public), higher for long-term blocks past 5 consecutive days at the same school.
Local tip
Long-term casual engagements over 4 weeks trigger permanent-equivalent conditions (planning time, sick leave pro-rata).

VIC

VIT
Registration needed
Provisional (PRT) VIT registration lets you work as a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT).
Background check
VIT registration bundles a national police check — no separate WWCC required for paid teaching.
How to get bookings
DET Casual Relief Teacher pool via Recruitment Online + agencies like anzuk and ClassCover.
Indicative day rate
CRT daily rate from ~$440 (Graduate) to ~$560+ (Experienced) under the Victorian Government Schools Agreement.
Local tip
After 30 consecutive days at one school you must be paid at the equivalent time-fraction contract rate.

QLD

QCT
Registration needed
Provisional or Full QCT registration is required before any supply/relief day.
Background check
QCT registration covers suitability — no separate Blue Card required while QCT registration is current.
How to get bookings
Department of Education TRACER supply pool plus Catholic Education and Independent school lists.
Indicative day rate
Approx. $460–$600/day depending on Band and Zone; remote Zone 4–7 attracts additional locality allowance.
Local tip
Half-day and hourly rates apply — confirm the school records your booking type correctly in TRACER.

WA

TRBWA
Registration needed
Full or Provisional TRBWA registration plus a National Police Clearance.
Background check
Working With Children Check (WWCC) — separate from teacher registration and must be current.
How to get bookings
Department of Education Relief Teacher pool. Country and regional pools attract higher daily rates.
Indicative day rate
~$460–$560/day metro; country and remote schools add locality and travel allowances.
Local tip
Register with country schools directly — they often struggle to fill relief and pay incentives on top.

SA

TRB SA
Registration needed
Provisional or Full TRB SA registration; RRHAN-EC mandatory notification training must be current.
Background check
DHS Working With Children Check required in addition to registration.
How to get bookings
Department for Education TRMS (Temporary Relief Management System) plus Catholic Education SA lists.
Indicative day rate
Approx. $430–$540/day under the SA Government Schools Enterprise Agreement.
Local tip
Update your TRMS availability the night before — most bookings roll out between 6:30am and 7:30am.

TAS

TRB Tas
Registration needed
Provisional or Full TRB Tas registration.
Background check
Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) — Employment category — required.
How to get bookings
Department for Education, Children and Young People relief pool. Agency work is limited in TAS.
Indicative day rate
Approx. $415–$525/day under the Tasmanian Teaching Service agreement.
Local tip
Rural schools in the North-West and West Coast often pay travel from your nearest town on top of the day rate.

ACT

TQI
Registration needed
Provisional or Full TQI registration.
Background check
Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration required.
How to get bookings
ACT Education Directorate Relief Teacher Register. Catholic Education Canberra–Goulburn keeps a separate list.
Indicative day rate
Approx. $470–$580/day; higher for blocks over 5 days at the same school.
Local tip
Register with both public and Catholic systems — the ACT market is small and cross-listing lifts booking frequency.

NT

TRB NT
Registration needed
Provisional or Full TRB NT registration.
Background check
Ochre Card (Working With Children Clearance) required and must remain current.
How to get bookings
Casual/relief work is arranged directly with schools; remote schools often include travel and accommodation.
Indicative day rate
Approx. $445–$570/day plus remote locality allowance where applicable.
Local tip
Remote community schools frequently offer flights and on-site accommodation for short blocks — ask upfront.
The relief teacher's kitbag

What to keep in your bag

Every experienced relief teacher carries the same short list. You won't always be left a plan — this kit means you can run a purposeful lesson regardless.

  • Whiteboard markers and a board eraser
  • A pack of A4 lined paper and spare pens
  • USB with a few age-appropriate lesson fillers (silent reading tasks, quick-write prompts, mental maths)
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Water bottle, hat and sunscreen for yard duty
  • Notebook to log the day (attendance, incidents, work covered) for the classroom teacher

Day rates and eligibility change with each enterprise bargaining round. Confirm the current figure against your state's union or EBA before accepting long-term work.
